Disclaimer:
Policy specifics can differ since companies provide a range of plans. We selected the option we found most appealing, but additional research might reveal a plan that better suits your needs.
Our rankings are based on a defined methodology, and we recommend reviewing it to ensure it meets your priorities. Although we aim for precision, the final decision is yours, and consulting an insurance professional may offer a more personalized comparison than this article can provide.
Alright, with this out of the way, let’s get started.
1. Feather: Ideal for English speakers
Pricing: Starting from €4.48 per month in small cities and the countryside, in larger cities (like Berlin, Hamburg and München), starting at €12.80 per month.
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Our Take
Feather’s bike insurance stands out as our top choice for English speakers in Germany for a few reasons.
Here’s why it’s our favorite in this comparison:
- Feather’s bike insurance has no waiting periods. You’re covered from day one, and protected if anything happens to your bike right after you sign up.
- The contract terms are flexible (minimum commitment is only one year). After that, you can cancel anytime.
- Feather also has an excellent reputation (4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot). 94% reviews are 5-star, while only 2% rate Feather 1-star.
Regarding coverage, Feather can insure both regular bikes and e-bikes (as long as they don’t need registration). Unlike many alternatives, it covers high-value carbon-framed bikes and does not exclude bikes older than 5 years old.
For those who appreciate transparency, Feather’s policy is straightforward. You get exactly what’s promised, and there are no hidden catches.
And here’s an extra perk: if you want to replace your bike with the same model and its price has increased since you insured it, you’re covered with a 15% buffer.

Disclaimer
With nearly a decade of experience in the insurance industry and exceptional client reviews, we believe our performance merits a top ranking. However, we encourage you to consider the pros and cons provided and your needs, as well as determine if Feather suits you.
2. Ammerländer Versicherung: For affordability
Recommended plan: Classic.
Pricing: Starting at €5.20 per month.
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Our Take
Ammerländer Versicherung has a 4.2 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot, which is solid for its price range. Most reviews (about 80%) are 5-star, so many people are happy with it.
That said, around 17% of reviewers have had negative experiences. This means about 1 in 5 customers report issues, which could be something to consider if reliability is key for you.
But Ammerländer is definitely affordable.
If your goal is to keep costs down, this policy is one of the best options.
Another drawback is how wear and tear coverage works:
If your bike is over three years old, it won’t be covered for it. And even if it’s younger, you’re not covered for wear on tires and brakes, which are usually the parts that need replacing.
Disclaimer
We concentrated on the Classic plan because it delivers excellent value for its price. However, Ammerländer Versicherung also offers alternative options that might alter the balance of pros and cons discussed above.

3. Hepster: Our favorite damage & wear protection
Recommended plan: Beschädigung und Verschleiß.
Pricing: starting from €1.20 per month.
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Our Take
Hepster is one of the few companies offering wear and damage coverage without theft protection.
This makes it the most budget-friendly policy in our rankings, averaging just €2 per month. This coverage protects you against almost all wear and tear and other types of damage.
It’s an attractive option for those who have secure indoor storage for their bike and are confident that access to this storage won’t be compromised.
Another noteworthy feature is the ability to specify whether your bike is made of carbon fiber. If it isn’t, you can save some money, as coverage for carbon bikes tends to be pricier.
Plus, Hepster covers bikes used for commercial purposes, which isn’t common.
However, it’s important to note that Hepster has a 2.5 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot, with 50% of reviewers giving it just one star.
Disclaimer
We focused on the Beschädigung und Verschleiß plan because it is one of the few plans that exclude theft from its coverage, allowing Hepster to offer highly competitive prices for those who do not need it.
However, they offer theft protection as an add-on, providing comparable coverage to the other policies featured in this post. Please note that the strengths and weaknesses related to coverage details are based on this specific plan.

4. Adam Riese: Amazing for touring cyclists
Our recommended plan: Tariff XXL.
Pricing: Starts at €63.21 per month.
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Our Take
Adam Riese bike insurance is popular among travelers who plan to bike across Europe. It offers solid benefits for roadside emergencies, especially if you’re on the move in different cities or countries.
However, with ratings of 2.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot, Adam Riese doesn’t seem to win everyone over. Only one in three customers gives it a full 5-star review, while 61% of reviews rate it just 1 star.
Despite that, Adam Riese offers excellent coverage, especially for bikepackers.
Here’s what you can expect if you run into trouble while on the road:
- Hotel stay: If your bike breaks down and you need to stay somewhere overnight, they’ll cover up to €80 per night for a maximum of 5 nights.
- Travel assistance: You can take a taxi or public transportation to continue your trip, with a maximum budget of €500.
- Bike rental: If you need a replacement bike, they’ll cover up to €50 per day for up to 14 days.
One major downside is the 3-months waiting period for claims.
Additionally, if you file a theft or wear-and-tear claim for brakes or tires, a new 3-month waiting period will apply from the date of that claim.
This delay can feel restrictive, as you may be paying for coverage that isn’t immediately available.
Adam Riese bike insurance works best for cyclists who plan to travel widely in Europe, where the extended roadside coverage could be a real asset.
Plus, you can take advantage of their flexible cancellation to take out this policy 3 months before you’re going away (so that the waiting periods don’t apply during your trip).
Disclaimer
We focused on the XXL plan because it offers extensive protection for cyclists who are on the road. However, they provide a range of plans that cater to customers in different circumstances, including plans that have comparable coverage to others discussed in this rating. Please note that the strengths and weaknesses related to coverage details are based on this specific plan.
Check their website for more information.
5. Household contents insurance: Best bicycle insurance alternative
Pricing: From €5.00 per month
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Our Take
Here’s the deal…
A dedicated bike insurance policy is a solid choice if you want insurance just for your bike. But there’s another option worth considering—household contents insurance.
You can add bike coverage to your plan with most household contents insurance. This can be a great deal for the price.
For example, adding bike coverage to your contents insurance at Feather could cost only €2 to €5 extra per month.
However, there’s one main limitation: you’re covered only for bike theft. Plus, there’s a cap on your bike’s value—up to 3000€ plus 1% of your total insured amount.
On the plus side, this type of insurance doesn’t just protect your bike.
You’re also covering your belongings in case of incidents like fires or burglaries. So, for a small monthly fee, you get broader protection.
In short, if you want good value and overall coverage, household contents insurance with bike protection can be a smart, affordable alternative.

Our methodology
It’s important to us to be transparent about how we selected the bike insurance companies featured in our post.
Here are the steps we took:
- Identifying contenders: We consulted our internal insurance experts to select 20 companies for evaluation.
- Gathering data: We obtained quotes and sample policies for each company, totaling around 50 policies for comparison.
- Analyzing policy details: We carefully examined each plan’s:
- Pricing
- Coverage inclusions and exclusions
- Coverage limits
- Deductible
- Assessing customer satisfaction: We reviewed customer feedback on Trustpilot as an indicator of satisfaction. However, since dissatisfied customers are more likely to leave reviews, this may introduce a negative bias—especially for companies with a more extensive customer base. We recommend checking additional sources such as Google Reviews and Yelp for a broader perspective. We last updated our review scores on February 24, 2025.
- Testing Customer Support: Over three weeks, we contacted each company’s helpline 10 times on different days and times to assess whether they could connect us with an English-speaking representative.
