Finding the best bike insurance in Germany can feel overwhelming, especially with so many options out there.

At Feather, we’re proud of our policies and even prouder of how our bike insurance stacks up to competitors.

But we get it—not everyone’s needs are the same, and our plans might not be the perfect fit for everyone.

That’s why we took the time to break down the bike insurance options available in Germany.

After reviewing over 20 companies, we narrowed it down to the top 5 for 2024.

Each has unique benefits, so let’s dive into who made the list this year and what makes them stand out.

1. Feather: Best overall

Pricing: Starting from €4.48 per month in small cities and the countryside, in larger cities (like Berlin, Hamburg and München), starting at €12.80 per month.

StrengthsWeaknesses
✅ Best rated company in our analysis❌ Commercial bikes cannot be covered
✅ Fast, online sign-up in English.❌ Cosmetic repairs (e.g., scratches or paint touch-ups) aren’t covered
✅ Bike parts and accessories covered.❌ You need to lock your bike to something fixed, like a pole or bike rack, to cover it against theft.
✅ Claims processed in 2-6 weeks on average.
✅ Cover up to €12,000.
✅ Wear and tear repairs covered for bikes less than 5 years old.

Our Take

Feather’s bike insurance stands out as the top choice for English speakers in Germany for a few reasons. Here’s why it’s our favorite in this comparison:

First, Feather’s bike insurance has no waiting periods. That means you’re covered from day one, so you’re protected if anything happens to your bike right after you sign up.

Second, the contract terms are flexible.

The minimum commitment is only one year; after that, you can cancel any time at the end of the month. This flexibility gives you more control than many other bike insurance policies that might lock you in for longer.

Feather also has an impressive reputation, scoring 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot. Nearly all (94%) reviews are 5-star, showing that customers are consistently happy with the service, while only a tiny percentage (2%) report negative experiences.

Regarding coverage, Feather can insure both regular bikes and e-bikes (as long as they don’t need registration). Unlike many competitors, it even covers high-value carbon-framed bikes and does not exclude bikes older than 5 years old.

For those who appreciate transparency, Feather’s policy is straightforward. You get exactly what’s promised, and there are no hidden catches.

If you have questions, it is easy to schedule a call with the team.

And here’s an extra perk: if you want to replace your bike with the same model and its price has increased since you insured it, you’re covered with a 15% buffer.

Bike insurance in Germany, starting at €4.48 per month.

Get comprehensive coverage for both new and used bikes.

2. Ammerländer Versicherung: Best budget-option

Pricing: Starting at €5.20 per month.

StrengthsWeaknesses
✅ Very affordable prices❌ Sign up and customer support in German only.
✅ You don’t need to lock your bike to something fixed, like a pole or bike rack, for it to be covered against theft.❌ To get reimbursed for a stolen or damaged bike, you have to buy a replacement bike first.
❌ Wear and tear coverage is limited.
❌ 3-month notice period to cancel the contract.

Our Take

Ammerländer Versicherung has a 4.3 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot, which is solid for its price range. Most reviews (about 80%) are 5-star, so many people are happy with it.

That said, around 17% of reviewers have had negative experiences. This means about 1 in 5 customers report issues, which could be something to consider if reliability is key for you.

But Ammerländer is definitely affordable.

If your goal is to keep costs down, this policy is one of the best options. However, you might get lower service quality than with pricier plans. For instance, some customers have experienced unexpected policy cancellations without making a claim.

Another drawback is how wear and tear coverage works.

If your bike is over three years old, it won’t be covered for it. And even if it’s younger, you’re not covered for wear on tires and brakes, which are usually the parts that need replacing.

It’s a smart pick for budget-conscious customers, but if you want more extensive coverage or reliable support in English, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

3. Hepster: Best for customization

Pricing: starting from €8.41 per month

StrengthsWeaknesses
Highly customizable plansHard to cancel (cancel 3 days before the end of a yearly contract; otherwise, you’re locked in for another year.)
Covers commercially used bikes6-week waiting period for older bikes
Discounts are available depending on the time of year.To file a claim, you need to purchase a replacement bike first.

Our Take

Hepster offers flexible options to cover a range of bicycles.

You can choose basic coverage for things like wear and tear, and that would be the most affordable policy in our rating (around €2 per month). Or, you can add theft protection to get similar coverage to the other policies featured in this post.

One standout feature is the ability to specify if your bike is made of carbon. This can save you money on your quote if you’re not riding a carbon bike, as coverage for these materials can be pricier.

Plus, Hepster covers commercial bikes, which isn’t common with many bike insurance providers.

While Hepster is flexible, its customer service is a red flag. On Trustpilot, they have a 2.5 out of 5 rating, with 48% of reviewers giving them only 1 star

Customers report frustration with slow response times and long waits for claim payouts. For example, some customers have waited over six months to get a claim paid, and it can take more than three weeks to get a reply from support.

So, if customization is key for you, Hepster is worth considering. Remember that getting help or resolving issues might take some patience.

4. Adam Riese: Best for traveling cyclists

Pricing: Our recommended plan, Tariff XXL, starts at €63.21 per month.

StrengthsWeaknesses
✅ Roadside assistance all over Europe is included in the recommended plan.❌ No English-speaking support or sign-up.
✅ Can cover expensive accessories (up to €2,000).❌ Only insures bikes up to 5 years old.
✅ Theft protection applies even if your bike isn’t locked to a fixed object like a pole or bike rack.❌ Includes a 3-month waiting period, with another 3 months after a claim. This applies to theft claims as well as wear and tear on brakes and tires.
✅ No minimum contract term.

Our Take

Adam Riese bike insurance is popular among travelers who plan to bike across Europe. It offers solid benefits for roadside emergencies, especially if you’re on the move in different cities or countries.

However, it has some noticeable drawbacks, particularly with customer satisfaction and claim handling.

With a low rating of 2.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot, Adam Riese doesn’t win everyone over. Only one in three customers gives it a full 5-star review, while 60% of reviews rate it just 1 star

Many customers report that handling issues with the company requires persistence, especially when dealing with customer support. You’ll need to be comfortable speaking and writing in German and prepared to advocate for yourself in disputes.

Despite these challenges, Adam Riese offers excellent coverage, especially for travelers. Here’s what you can expect if you run into trouble while on the road:

  • Hotel stay: If your bike breaks down and you need to stay somewhere overnight, they’ll cover up to €80 per night for a maximum of 5 nights.
  • Travel assistance: You can take a taxi or public transportation to continue your trip, with a maximum budget of €500.
  • Bike rental: If you need a replacement bike, they’ll cover up to €50 per day for up to 14 days.

One major downside is the 3-months waiting period for claims.

Additionally, if you file a theft or wear-and-tear claim for brakes or tires, a new 3-month waiting period will apply from the date of that claim.

This delay can feel restrictive, as you may be paying for coverage that isn’t immediately available.

Adam Riese bike insurance works best for cyclists who plan to travel widely in Europe, where the extended roadside coverage could be a real asset.

Plus, you can use their flexible cancellation to take out this policy 3 months before you’re going away (so that the waiting periods don’t apply).

5. Household contents insurance: Best bicycle insurance alternative

Pricing: From €5.00 per month

StrengthsWeaknesses
Covered for theft anywhere in the world. No wear and tear coverage.
Covers all the other items inside your home.Lower payout limit for bikes.
It is more affordable than a standalone bike policy.

Our Take

Here’s the deal…

A dedicated bike insurance policy is a solid choice if you want insurance just for your bike. But there’s another option worth considering—household contents insurance.

You can add bike coverage to your plan with most household contents insurance. This can be a great deal for the price

For example, adding bike coverage to your contents insurance at Feather could cost only €2 to €5 extra per month.

However, there’s one main limitation: you’re covered only for bike theft. Plus, there’s a cap on your bike’s value—up to 3000€ plus 1% of your total insured amount.

On the plus side, this type of insurance doesn’t just protect your bike.

You’re also covering your belongings in case of incidents like fires or burglaries. So, for a small monthly fee, you get broader protection.

In short, if you want good value and overall coverage, household contents insurance with bike protection can be a smart, affordable alternative.

Our methodology

It’s important to us to be transparent about how we selected the best bike insurance companies featured in our post.

Here are the steps we took:

  1. First, we asked our internal insurance experts to recommend 25 different insurance providers in Germany. This gave us a strong starting list.
  2. Next, we collected quotes and sample policies from each provider’s plans, adding up to around 40 policies.
  3. After gathering these, we carefully reviewed each policy’s details. Here’s what we focused on:
    1. Price: We compared costs to see which plans offer the best value.
    2. Coverage: We looked at what each plan includes, such as protection against theft, damage, and other features.
    3. Exclusions: We noted what each policy doesn’t cover, which helped us spot any limitations.
    4. Coverage limits: We examined the maximum amounts a plan will cover for a claim.
    5. Deductibles: We reviewed any upfront costs you might need to pay when making a claim.
    6. Waiting periods: We checked for delays between signing up and when coverage starts, ensuring you know when your bike will be fully protected.
  4. Finally, we didn’t stop at just the policy details. To understand the quality of each company’s service, we analyzed customer reviews on Trustpilot. This feedback helped us see how customers felt about the company’s service, support, and overall experience.

By combining these factors, we built a list highlighting bike insurance options that balance good coverage and a strong customer experience.
