Why get renters insurance in Germany?

In many countries, renters insurance is one policy. Germany splits it in two: Household insurance (Hausratversicherung) and personal liability (Haftpflichtversicherung).

The first covers your own belongings, the second the damage you cause to other people's property. The two don't overlap, so most renters get both.
