What is the German freelance visa?

The freelance residence permit lets non-EU nationals live in Germany and work for themselves. It covers the liberal professions: writers, designers, developers, translators, teachers, architects, doctors, journalists, and consultants.

What you'll need to show

You'll need two or three clients or letters of intent, income to live on (Berlin asks roughly €46,000 a year after tax), proof of address, and health insurance. Over 45? Add retirement provision: €1,612.53 monthly pension or €232,204 in assets.

What type of insurance?

The consulate accepts an expat policy (ours starts at €72 per month) as long as it doesn't expire or cancel because of your stay. Travel insurance and foreign policies don't pass that second check.

Clock

How the permit works

Your first permit runs for up to three years and renews as long as your work supports you. Freelancers can apply for permanent residence after five years.

Coverage before your visa is issued

German missions only issue the visa once you show proof of health insurance, so this belongs in the file rather than on the to-do list for later. Your certificate is ready to download the moment you sign up.

Valid for up to 5 years

Expat coverage is built for your first 5 years of your life in Germany. After that, you'll need German statutory or private insurance, and that's a different product. We offer both, so talk to us and we'll help you move across without a gap.
