To apply for the Chancenkarte, you must provide proof of valid health insurance that meets the following criteria:

• Private incoming health insurance is required; Schengen travel insurance is not sufficient.

• Must be valid in Germany and all Schengen states.

• Must cover the entire validity period of the Chancenkarte (typically up to 12 months).

• Minimum Coverage: Should include at least €30,000 in medical coverage.

• Documentation: You must submit a certificate of insurance as proof with your application.

Note:

While coverage for pre-existing conditions is not officially required, some German embassies may recommend or expect it in practice.

Public health insurance is not available to Chancenkarte applicants, as you need to be employed. We provide a supplementary letter explaining this and confirming that our private expat policy is the appropriate and valid option for Chancenkarte applicants.

Our policies are monthly rolling contracts. You do not need to pay upfront for the entire year. However, if the visa office insists on proof of prepayment, we can provide an Annual Statement of Charges showing the expected total yearly premium, which often satisfies this requirement.

Our expat policy is valid for up to 5 years. It can be cancelled monthly, giving you flexibility as your circumstances change (e.g. switching to public/private health insurance after employment).

We issue:

• A certificate of insurance with start date and policy details.

• A supplementary letter explaining compliance with Chancenkarte visa rules.

• An annual statement of charges to satisfy embassies requesting 12 months prepayment.

These documents are tailored to the expectations of German embassies and visa offices.

We recommend purchasing the policy anytime prior to the appointment, ensuring you have a valid start date that covers your intended arrival. The policy can be cancelled at any time if your plans change. Please note that we cannot backdate policies.

If your Chancenkarte visa is denied, you can cancel your policy by logging into your Feather account. Please note that if your policy has already started, a one month minimum charge applies. Our team can also assist in issuing additional documents to appeal or clarify your insurance status to the visa office.
