Please note that those with private health insurance are unable and should not sign up for of supplemental dental insurance as private health as comprehensive dental coverage embedded in it.
Is dental insurance free in Germany?
No, dental insurance is not free in Germany but it is included as part of your public/statutory health insurance. This type of dental insurance will be limited, and will not cover premium or advanced treatments (please see below for reference).
To boost this limited package, supplemental dental insurance is available for those who are publicly/statutorily insured. Unfortunately, those with private health insurance are unable to add this supplemental dental coverage to their health insurance plans.

Is tooth extraction free in Germany?
No, tooth extraction is not free in Germany. Public/statutory health insurance will cover the cost by up to 60% and the remainder will be paid out-of-pocket.
If you do find yourself in such a situation, our supplemental advanced dental insurance policy can remove some of the financial stress – it supports the costs that are not covered by public/statutory health insurance by up to 90%.
Is root canal treatment covered by health insurance in Germany?
Yes, root canal treatment is partially covered by public/statutory health insurance.
Our supplemental dental insurance policy, beginning at just €9 per month, will partially cover the cost of root and periodontal treatment.
Are high-quality fillings covered by health insurance in Germany?
Yes, high-quality fillings can be partially covered by public/statutory health insurance, but the remaining costs – which you will have to pay out-of-pocket – can exceed €110.
Our supplemental dental insurance policy, beginning at just €9 per month, will cover the cost of such treatments, including composite fillings and dentine bonding agents.
Are dental implants covered in Germany?
Dental implants aren’t usually covered. However, other tooth replacement procedures such as crowns, veneers, onlays, inlays, and bridges – are partially covered up to 60% but only if medically necessary. So additional costs of around €1,860 per treatment are possible.

Is dental treatment expensive in Germany?
Dental treatment can be expensive but there are ways to mitigate these costs so that they become much more manageable. It’s important for all German residents to familiarize themselves with what falls into the standard-care dentistry (Regelversorgung) category and what doesn’t.
These everyday treatments can cost the following:
- Professional cleaning: €80+
- Crowns: €150+
- Bridges: €340+
- Root canals: €200–€1,000
- Teeth whitening: €30–€70 per tooth
As mentioned above, signing up for a supplemental dental policy is the smartest and most cost-effective way to prepare for essential treatments and elective cosmetic procedures (such as teeth whitening).
