What is the long-stay visitor visa?

The VLS-TS visiteur is a long-stay visa that doubles as a residence permit. It's for people living in France for 3+ months without working, for retirees and those on pension, investment, or rental income.

What you'll need to show

Consulates expect the minimum wage (€1,478 net a month). You'll also need a written commitment not to work, prove where you'll be living, and health insurance for your stay.

What happens when you arrive

The visa is issued for up to a year. Within three months of arriving, you validate it online and pay a residence tax. That's the step that turns your visa into a residence permit.

Clock

Renewing, year after year

You'll renew annually at your préfecture as a carte de séjour visiteur. After five years of continuous residence, you can apply for long-term residence.
