What is the Dutch self-employed permit?
The self-employed residence permit lets non-EU nationals live in the Netherlands and work for themselves. Two versions exist: American and Japanese must invest €4,500 in their business. Everyone else goes through a scoring system run by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, which weighs your experience, your business plan, and what your work adds to the Dutch economy.
What you'll need to show
For Americans and Japanese individuals: €4,500 in your business, registration with the Chamber of Commerce, and a business bank account. For others: 30+ points in each of the three scored areas, plus gross profit of €1,766.77 a month, and at least one confirmed Dutch commission.
Insurance is recommended
The IND doesn't ask for health insurance in your application. While your application is pending, you're legally barred from buying Dutch basic health insurance, even if you already hold an MVV. You can't be uninsured, and you can't buy the compulsory Dutch policy.
After your permit is granted
Once your permit takes effect, Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering) becomes compulsory and you have four months to arrange it. Sign up inside that window and coverage backdates to the day your permit started. Miss it and there's no retroactive coverage, plus two fines of €529.74.
A policy built for the waiting period

The only coverage you can access
This is the unusual part of the Dutch system. Until the IND decides your application, Dutch basic insurance isn't available to you at all. An expat policy isn't a nice-to-have during that stretch, it's the only option.

Coverage for the whole journey
Most American applicants arrive visa-free, then spend two to four months finding an address, registering with the municipality, setting up at the Chamber of Commerce, and waiting for a decision. During that time, our policy lets you access Dutch doctors and Dutch hospitals.

Flexible coverage
When your permit lands, basic insurance becomes compulsory and takes over the essentials. Cancel Feather in one click at that point, or keep it alongside if you want faster access to specialists, private clinics, and coverage that follows you outside the Netherlands.
The application process
Prepare your documents
Passport, business plan, proof of your qualifications and experience, and evidence of funds. American applicants need €4,500 ready for the business account. Everyone else builds a file for the points assessment.
Register in the Netherlands
Register with your municipality to get a BSN, then register your business with the Chamber of Commerce and open a business bank account.
Apply to the IND
Submit your application and pay the €423 fee. American applicants no longer send the Chamber of Commerce registration and bank statements up front. You do have to complete the registration and deposit within six months of approval.
Arrange your Dutch insurance
Once your permit takes effect, you have four months to take out basic health insurance. It backdates to your permit date, and so do the premiums. Let us know when your decision arrives and we'll help you switch.
