Our take

Feather is the best-rated travel insurance in Germany, earning 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot.

While the one-year contract may not be ideal for infrequent travelers (who might want to explore other options in this post), it makes the policy surprisingly affordable.

Feather’s coverage levels are high, with benefits like €2,000 in trip cancellation protection on the Premium plan.

And, it also stands out with a €0 deductible, meaning you won’t have to cover any costs out of pocket before your insurance kicks in.

Medical coverage is particularly strong—doctor visits, hospital stays, and most other treatments have unlimited coverage.

That means you’re protected even in high-cost destinations like the U.S., where a simple ambulance ride could set you back $1300.

Annual plan €18 for individuals and €32 for families.

Our take

HanseMerkur’s single-trip travel insurance stands out for its affordability and extensive coverage, making it a solid choice for single-trip insurance.

The travel insurance plan includes 100% reimbursement for essential medical expenses, including:

  • Outpatient and inpatient treatments
  • Ambulance transport
  • Prescription medications
  • And medical aids (excluding vision and hearing devices).

It also provides full coverage for pregnancy-related exams, complications, and premature births. Should the worst happen, HanseMerkur also covers funeral expenses abroad or the repatriation of remains up to the full cost.

The travel cancellation and curtailment insurance (which you have to buy seperately) is also highly customizable.

You can adjust your coverage based on how much you want to insure and even opt for add-ons like the Active-Holiday Plus package—ideal for skiers and adventure travelers. With it, if your equipment gets damaged or you’re unable to participate in your planned activities, you’re covered.

With its competitive pricing and extensive benefits, HanseMerkur’s single-trip insurance is a great option for travelers seeking reliable coverage for an upcoming holiday.

Our take

The ReiseMed Tariff RD Individual plan by DKV is the most budget-friendly option in our review, delivering solid coverage at an affordable price.

It’s a good choice for travelers looking for health insurance abroad without overspending.

That said, there are a few trade-offs.

The plan has the lowest search and rescue coverage among our top picks, capped at €10,000.

Additionally, non-German speakers may find customer support challenging, as English assistance is extremely limited.

DKV’s online reputation is also worth noting.

With a Trustpilot rating of just 1.4 out of 5, customer satisfaction appears to be a weak point.

Still, if affordability is your top priority, this plan remains a strong contender.

Disclaimer:

DKV offers a range of plans, meaning plans other than ReiseMed Tariff RD Individual may offer better value for your individual circumstances. Methodology

To compile our list, we followed the following research process to evaluate each insurance provider objectively:

1. Selecting contenders

We began by consulting our internal insurance experts, who identified 15 potential providers based on industry reputation, market presence, and coverage offerings.

2. Policy comparison

We obtained quotes and sample policies for each company’s plans to ensure an accurate comparison. We reviewed approximately 35 policies, analyzing their structure, benefits, and exclusions.

3. Policy analysis

We carefully examined the fine print of each policy, focusing on the following key factors:

  • Pricing – How competitively priced the plans are compared to the market average.
  • Coverage Details – What is included in the plan and the level of protection offered.
  • Exclusions – What specific scenarios, conditions, or claims are not covered.
  • Coverage limits – The maximum payout or reimbursement allowed under the policy.
  • Deductibles – The out-of-pocket costs policyholders must pay before coverage applies.

4. Customer satisfaction assessment

To gauge overall customer satisfaction, we analyzed reviews on Trustpilot. While online reviews are inherently subject to bias—negative experiences are more frequently reported than positive ones—this provided us with a helpful proxy for customer satisfaction.

Readers may also choose to explore reviews on platforms such as Google Reviews, Yelp, and others for a more comprehensive understanding.

We last reviewed and updated our ratings based on these sources on March 6, 2025.

5. Customer support

To assess the accessibility and quality of each company’s customer service, we conducted 10 calls over three weeks, reaching out at different times and on different days. Our goal was to determine:

  • Response time and availability
  • Whether the company could connect us to an English-speaking representative

Conclusion

And that’s our list of what we think are some of the best travel health insurance options available to German residents.

We’ve provided a thorough breakdown, but the most unbiased feedback often comes from other travelers.

Before you decide, take a look at customer reviews to ensure the plan aligns with your travel needs, budget, and expectations.

Even better, speak with an insurance expert to find the best coverage for your specific travel plans.
