Finding the best dental insurance in Germany is tricky (especially with so many options available).
While we handle claims for hundreds of clients each year (and pay out tens of thousands of euros, too), we understand that our plans might not be the best fit for everyone.
That’s why we took the time to compare dental insurance plans available in Germany for you.
After comparing over 30 different dental insurance companies in Germany, we’ve narrowed it down to the 6 best for 2024. But, if you like to research, we also have tips on finding great dental insurance by yourself.
Let’s look at who made the list this year.
Best dental insurance in Germany: At a glance
Provider | Best for | Monthly premiums | English support | Trustpilot rating |
Feather | Best overall | From €10.90 | Yes ✅ | 4.8/5 |
Ergo | Pre-existing conditions | From €37.80 | No ❌ | 3.6/5 |
Württembergische | Long-term residents | From €22.50 | Rarely ❌ | 1.6/5 |
Getsafe | Budget-conscious | From €8.80 | Yes ✅ | 3.1/5 |
Ottonova | Customization | From €9.81 | Yes ✅ | 3.2/5 |
Allianz | Young children | From €18.77 | Sometimes ❌ | 4.1/5 |
1. Feather: Best overall
Our recommended plan: Standard
Pricing: from €10.90 per month
Strengths | Weaknesses |
English support available via voice and video calls, email, and chat. | The Advanced plan is more expensive than others in our rating. |
Get treatment from day one (no waiting periods). | Coverage limits apply for major treatments in the first 3 years. |
Covers preventative treatments like fluoride and sensitivity treatments. | Doesn’t cover purely cosmetic treatments. |
Includes professional dental cleaning (€150 per year with no deductible). | Braces and aligners are covered only for treatments started before turning 21 (to be fair, this is true of all the plans we compared.) |
Any existing limits are waived in case of an accident. |
Our Take
Feather’s Standard plan is Germany’s best dental insurance of 2024. Why?
It provides excellent coverage as soon as your plan starts, so you can get dental care from day one.
The plan also gets better the longer you have it, as coverage limits add up each year. Even if there are some limits during the first years for a few major treatments, the good news is that any unused coverage rolls over into the next year. So, unless you need something big immediately, this works to your advantage.
The Advanced plan from Feather is perfect for those who want to upgrade their coverage, especially regarding tooth replacement (think implants, bridges, crowns, and inlays).
Rated 4.8 out of 5, Feather is Germany’s top-rated insurance company. The customer service team is responsive and composed of English speakers; no “Deutsch” needed.
You can contact the team for help choosing a plan, determining what’s covered, and ensuring that you make the best use of your coverage.
Dental insurance in Germany from €10.90 per month
2. Ergo: Best for those with pre-existing conditions
Our recommended plan: Zahnzusatzversicherung Sofort (ZEZ)
Pricing: from €37.80 per month
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Covers ongoing dental treatments. | The most expensive plan in our comparison. |
No limits on coverage in the first years. | Two-year contract before cancellation is allowed. |
Up to 100% coverage on all treatments. | No English-speaking support. |
Our Take
Ergo’s ZEZ plan is (very) pricey, especially with its two-year commitment, but it’s one of the only plans that covers ongoing treatments.
This makes it the best choice for people with dental issues and need continuous care.
If you’re reading this post because you recently visited the dentist and need immediate coverage, this plan is for you. Its lack of coverage limits in the early years and complete treatment coverage are significant advantages for those with existing conditions.
Ergo has a 3.6 out of 5 rating.
So, while the service has had hiccups (about 40% of their reviews are 1-star), if you need coverage for ongoing treatments, the plan’s is worth it.
3. Württembergische: Best for long-term residents
Our recommended plan: ZahnSchutz Premium
Pricing: from €22.50 per month
Strengths | Weaknesses |
no waiting periods. | 2nd most expensive plan in our rating. |
100% coverage for dental prostheses. | No English-speaking customer support. |
Accepts treatments above the typical Fee Schedule for Dentists (GOZ). | Missing teeth will significantly increase your price and reduce reimbursements. |
High reimbursement amounts, even in the first few years. | Limits apply for five years. |
Our Take
The ZahnSchutz Premium plan from Württembergische is a good choice for long-term residents who want top-notch dental coverage in Germany.
Among the plans we compared, it provides the highest coverage for most treatments, including dental prostheses.
Before signing up, you should know this coverage has three significant tradeoffs.
- You’ll get solid benefits from the start, but the full coverage doesn’t kick in until five years after you sign up. With that said, the limits in the early years are generous.
- Another major downside is the lack of English-speaking support, which could be an issue for non-German speakers.
- Finally, the company’s rating of 1.5 out of 5 highlights concerns from existing customers, especially about communication and transparency during the claims process.
4. Getsafe: A budget-friendly plan
Our recommended plan: Only one plan available
Pricing: from €8.80 per month
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Most affordable plan in our comparison. | Two-year commitment before cancellation is allowed. |
English-speaking customer support is available. | Not available for children under 18. |
Up to 100% coverage of tooth fillings | Only 75% coverage for tooth replacements |
Limited dental cleaning coverage (€80 per year). |
Our Take
Getsafe’s dental insurance is a great option for those who need a budget-friendly plan. It’s the most affordable option we’ve reviewed, so if cost is your top priority, this could be a good fit.
That said, you’ll notice the lower price in your benefits.
For tooth replacements, they cover a maximum of 75%, which is less than all the other plans we reviewed. Plus, coverage limits are relatively low for the first four years, meaning your out-of-pocket costs could add up.
Another thing to remember is that Getsafe’s coverage depends heavily on approval from your public health insurance. Without that, you won’t get the best benefits.
Customers report that claims can take up to 4 months to process, and some have had trouble getting timely responses when requesting treatment pre-approval.
With an average review rating of 3.2 out of 5, Getsafe comes with a few compromises due to its affordability.
5. Ottonova: Best for customizable plans
Our recommended plan: Business Class
Pricing: from €9.81 per month
Strengths | Weaknesses |
English and German support are available. | Requires a two-year commitment before cancellation is possible. |
Concierge service to book appointments on your behalf. | Pain relief treatments are not covered. |
€1000 per year of coverage limit is higher than average | Coverage limits apply for 4 years |
70% to 100% coverage on dental treatments | Only 55% to 85% coverage on dental prostheses |
Our Take
Ottonova’s dental insurance is an excellent choice for those who want the flexibility to customize their plan.
With three base plans and several options to adjust coverage and pricing, it’s perfect for tailoring your policy to fit your needs. For example, you could choose between a €140 or €170 dental cleaning allowance, with a monthly price difference of €1.31.
This level of customization is not relevant for all, it’s good for those who like to fine-tune their coverage.
Like Getsafe, Ottonova has a four-year period during which coverage limits apply. However, Ottonova’s limits are higher, which makes sense given its price.
With an average rating of 3.3 out of 5, customers generally appreciate Ottonova’s features, such as the concierge service for booking dentist appointments. However, some customers have reported being reimbursed less than expected, so we recommend reading the policy’s fine print.
Don’t hesitate to ask for a sample policy.
6. Allianz: Best for families with young children
Our recommended plan: MeinZahnschutz 100
Pricing: from €18.77 per month
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Up to €3,000 covered for braces and orthodontic treatments started before age 21. | Two-year contract before cancellation is allowed. |
“Innovation guarantee” ensures that newly developed treatments can be added to your coverage. | No English-speaking customer support. |
Unlimited, 100% coverage for dental cleanings each year. | Significant price increases for those with existing conditions, like missing teeth. |
Our Take
Allianz is a top option for families with young children, especially with its generous €3,000 coverage for orthodontics—the highest among the plans we reviewed.
Plus, Allianz covers an unlimited amount of fully covered dental cleanings (another big plus for maintaining dental health). Note that dentist recommend only two per year, though.
The main drawback is their customer service. Slow response times and difficulties with canceling plans are common complaints. Allianz doesn’t offer English-speaking support either, which could be a barrier for non-German speakers.
For families focused on high orthodontic coverage and comprehensive dental cleanings, Allianz offers great value, though you might have to be patient with their customer service.
Our methodology
Here is a rundown of how we selected the companies featured in our list.
- First, we contacted our internal insurance experts to identify 25 different contenders.
- We then obtained quotes and sample policies for each of these companies’ plans. In total, we had around 60 policies to compare.
- From there, we dug into the fine print. Specifically, we looked at:
- The plan’s price
- What it covers
- What it does not cover
- Coverage limits
- Deductibles
- We also supplemented our findings with customer reviews on Trustpilot to understand customers’ satisfaction with the company’s service quality.
