Why do you need health insurance for a Swedish work permit?

Real health insurance, recognised for your permit
Feather International Health is underwritten by Barmenia, a licensed German health insurer, and managed in English by Feather. It covers you while you live in Sweden, not just on trips. Your visa compliance confirmation names you, Sweden as your country of cover, your dates, and every type of care Migrationsverket lists. That letter is what you send, not the full terms.

See exactly what you are covered for
For a Swedish permit, choose Plus with a €0 deductible. It covers outpatient and hospital care at 100% up to €2,500,000 a year, dental up to €2,000, mental health care and medical repatriation, with no waiting period for illness or accidents. Essential doesn't include outpatient therapy, so it doesn't count as comprehensive in Sweden. See the full Plus coverage.

What Migrationsverket asks for, and how we meet it
Which Swedish permits is this for?

A new job with a probation period
Your contract starts with a probation period, so your permit runs a year or less and you can't get a personnummer yet. For these permits, case officers ask for cover that includes pre-existing conditions, and expat plans get rejected. Plus with a €0 deductible is built for this, and once you're on the Swedish public system we release you early.

Work permits of one year or less
Since 1 June 2026, Migrationsverket asks everyone on a work permit of up to a year to show comprehensive health insurance for the whole stay. That includes short contracts and seasonal work. Your certificate lists each requirement, in English or Swedish.

Bringing your family on your work permit
Your spouse and children need the same comprehensive cover for the same period. Each of them gets their own confirmation for Migrationsverket, and you can manage everyone from one Feather account and one payment method.

Job seeker, student or Blue Card? Choose Expat Insurance instead
On a job seeker permit, studies under a year, an au pair or working holiday permit, an EU Blue Card, or working in Sweden as an EU citizen while you wait for your personnummer, our expat health insurance meets the requirement and costs less. Got a job with a probation period later? Switch to International Health.

Waiting periods & limits
Some relevant considerations before you sign up.

Waiting periods
While most treatments are covered immediately, there is a 10-month waiting period for childbirth, psychotherapy, and tooth replacement, and a 2-year waiting period for surgical vision correction such as LASIK.
Comprehensive coverage limits
Choose the level of protection you need, with annual limits of €300,000 on the Essential plan and up to €2,500,000 on the Plus plan.
Payments
Premiums are billed monthly in euros. We're working on making USD payments available soon.
Long-term security
Unlike many expat plans, this contract is not limited in time and is valid up to age 75, so you don't have to worry about your coverage expiring after a few years. After the minimum one-year contract period, you can cancel on a monthly basis.
