What is the Romania digital nomad visa?
Romania's digital nomad visa is a long-stay D visa for remote workers. It's for people employed by a company registered outside Romania, or running their own foreign-registered business, who want to live in Romania while working online for clients and employers abroad.
What you'll need to show
Consulates ask for income of about three times Romania's average gross salary: roughly 27,600 lei a month (around €5,500) in 2026, shown for each of the last six months. You'll also need proof of your remote work, accommodation in Romania, a clean criminal record, and health insurance.
After you arrive
The D visa lets you stay for 90 days. Before it runs out (at least 30 days before), you apply to the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) for a residence permit. That's the step that turns your visa into a stay of up to a year.
Renewing and staying longer
The residence permit is issued for 12 months and renews in 12-month steps while you still qualify. Each renewal means showing continued remote income, accommodation, and health insurance.
A policy built for the digital nomad visa

One policy for application and renewals
You'll show proof of health insurance twice at the start (at the consulate, then at IGI for your residence permit) and again at every annual renewal. Your Feather policy renews with you, so there's never a gap to explain.

No public healthcare to wait for
Romania's public system is contribution-based, and the digital nomad permit doesn't enroll you in it. If you stay under 183 days in any 12 months, you're exempt from Romanian income tax and health contributions on your foreign income. Private coverage like Feather's is what carries healthcare for your stay.

Flexible for a flexible visa
Digital nomad plans change. You pay monthly and can cancel anytime, so if you move on from Romania, your insurance moves on with you. And if you upgrade to our international health insurance, your coverage is worldwide.

The DNV application process
Prepare your documents
Your employment contract with a foreign company (or proof you own one), six months of income statements, an apostilled criminal record certificate, proof of accommodation, a letter of intent, and a health insurance certificate covering your stay.
Apply on the eViza portal
Submit your application at evisa.mae.ro, then attend your appointment at the Romanian consulate. The visa fee is €120. Plan for a few weeks to 45 days of processing, so apply two to three months before travel.
Enter Romania and register with IGI
Your D visa gives you 90 days. Apply for your residence permit at the General Inspectorate for Immigration at least 30 days before it expires. Expect around €120 in fees plus about 260 lei for the permit card.
Renew annually at IGI
Your permit is valid for 12 months and renews while you still qualify. You'll show continued remote income, accommodation, and health insurance each time.
