For newcomers to Portugal, Health insurance is usually required for Portuguese visas and residence permits, including:

  • D2 Entrepreneur visa
  • D6 Family reunification visa

Families moving to Portugal often need health insurance:

  • For family reunification visa applications, and during the period after arrival while waiting for residence permits and SNS registration.
  • Each family member must have their own health insurance coverage until they are fully registered in Portugal’s public healthcare system (SNS).

Waiting for getting on SNS?

After arrival, access to Portugal’s public healthcare system (SNS) is not immediate. Many expats use our health insurance while:

  • Waiting for their AIMA residence appointment
  • Registering for SNS and a Número de Utente and bridging the gap to stay covered
