What is the Italian Digital Nomad Visa?

The Italian Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) launched in 2024 and is one of the most accessible long-stay routes for non-EU remote workers and freelancers. It's designed for people who work remotely for non-Italian employers, or as self-employed professionals serving clients outside Italy.

To apply, you'll need to show an annual income of at least €28,000 for a single applicant (rising to around €34,000 for a couple, plus around €1,550 per dependent child), either a university degree or three or more years of professional experience in your field, proof of accommodation in Italy, and comprehensive health insurance valid for the duration of your stay.

The visa is issued for one year and renewed annually, up to a maximum of three years on the DNV. After that, you can transition to another permit type, and after five years of continuous legal residence in Italy you can apply for the long-term EU residence permit. Unlike the work visa, the DNV isn't subject to the Decreto Flussi quota and is open year-round.

Built for the DNV, not just the application

The DNV isn't just a visa to get through. It's up to three years of working and living in Italy, with annual renewals at the Questura. Feather is built to support the whole cycle, not just the consulate appointment.

Pay monthly, valid for the duration of your visa

Italian consulates require proof of insurance valid for the full duration of your visa. Your Feather policy is paid monthly by default, but the certificate clearly states that the policy is valid for a minimum of one year and renewable, which is what the consulate accepts. If you'd rather pay upfront for 12 months, just get in touch and we'll arrange it.

Comprehensive cover, not minimum compliance

Unlimited coverage for new conditions, full hospitalisation, outpatient care, and Schengen-wide validity. Designed to be your primary health coverage in Italy, including when you're traveling for work.

The DNV process at a glance

  1. Prepare your documents: passport, proof of remote work or freelance contracts, proof of income, proof of qualifications, proof of accommodation in Italy, and a health insurance certificate that meets consulate requirements.
  2. Apply at the Italian consulate in your country of residence. Processing takes 30 to 90 days. Visa fee is around €116.
  3. Apply for your permesso di soggiorno within 8 working days of arriving in Italy at a Poste Italiane post office.
  4. Renew annually at the Questura for up to three years total. You'll need to show continued income, valid accommodation, and current health insurance at each renewal.
