The Elective Residence Visa (ERV), formally the visto per residenza elettiva, is for people who want to live in Italy without working. It's designed for retirees and financially independent residents whose income comes from pensions, investments, rental properties, or other passive sources, not from employment.
To apply, you'll need to show passive income of at least €31,000 a year for a single applicant, €38,000 for a couple, plus an additional 20% per dependent child. In practice, most consulates look for higher figures and 12 months of bank statements. You'll also need proof of accommodation in Italy and comprehensive health insurance valid for the duration of your stay.
The initial residence permit lasts one year and is renewed annually at the Questura. After five years of continuous residence, you can apply for the long-term EU residence permit. After ten years, you're eligible to apply for Italian citizenship.
Feather provides unlimited coverage for new conditions, well above the consulate minimum.
Fully covered, including specialist treatment and diagnostic procedures during hospital stays.
GP visits, specialist consultations, prescriptions, and diagnostic tests are all included.
Included. Covers medical transport home if required, as well as repatriation of remains.
Your coverage travels with you across all Schengen countries.

The same Feather policy supports your initial ERV application, your permesso di soggiorno application and renewal. Whenever you're ready, we'll help you transition to the right long-term option for your situation.
Unlimited coverage for new conditions, full hospitalisation, outpatient care, and Schengen-wide validity. Designed to be your primary health coverage in Italy.
If you decide to enrol in the SSN voluntarily (around €2,000/year), you can either flexibly cancel your Feather policy, or keep it alongside the SSN for faster specialist access, choice of doctor, and English-speaking support. You're not locked in either way.

The ERV is built for people living on passive income. If you're working remotely or planning to invest in Italy, there are two other visas open year-round that might suit you better.
For remote workers and freelancers earning €28,000+ a year from a non-Italian employer or as a freelancer. Same €30,000 minimum health insurance requirement.
For people investing in Italian government bonds, Italian companies, innovative startups, or philanthropic donations. Investment thresholds range from €250,000 to €2 million depending on the route. Health insurance is required for the application.
