The Philippines has excellent private hospitals, but public coverage only takes you so far. PhilHealth, the national health insurance program, typically covers about 40% of a private hospital bill. And if you're there on a tourist visa, you can't join it at all.
Without insurance, a private doctor's visit costs ≈₱2500 (€35), and a day in hospital can run ≈₱30,000 (€420).
For some, it's not optional: the Digital Nomad Visa and the SRRV retirement visa both require valid health insurance.

PhilHealth covers the basics: doctor visits, hospital stays, outpatient care, and maternity care. But it pays fixed amounts per treatment, which often fall well short of a private hospital bill.
If you're employed, your employer automatically enrolls you. Retirees on an SRRV pay ₱15,000 per year (€230), and other residents can join voluntarily for ₱17,000 per year (€260).

You'll find pharmacies almost everywhere: Mercury Drug alone has over 1,000 branches, many open around the clock in Metro Manila and Cebu. Staff speak English, and so does the signage. Two things worth knowing: antibiotics you might buy over the counter at home need a prescription here, and emergency contraception isn't legally available.

Dial 911 for police, fire, or medical emergencies: operators speak English. You can also reach the Philippine Red Cross on 143. The Philippines spans more than 7,600 islands, where reaching a major hospital can mean a flight. That's why our plans include medical evacuation cover.

It depends on three things: Your age, desired level of coverage, and whether you opt for public or private.
If you're employed, you and your employer each contribute 5% of your income. Voluntary members pay ₱17,000 a year (€260), and for retirees, ₱15,000 (€230). But PhilHealth pays fixed amounts per treatment (40%).
Local HMOs start at around ₱3,600 a year (€55), but they won't cover you outside the Philippines, don't include medical evacuation, and make you wait 12 months for pre-existing conditions. International plans cover all three.
Applying for a Digital Nomad Visa or SRRV? Both require proof of private health insurance valid in the Philippines and covering hospitalization, emergencies, and medical repatriation for your entire stay.
