Why get private health insurance in Malaysia?
Malaysia has an excellent private hospital network. But as a foreigner, you get no public health subsidy, regardless of your visa or how long you've been there. The Ministry of Health charges full non-citizen rates indefinitely.
So, private cover is essential. Without it, a private GP visit costs about RM 78 (€17), and a private inpatient stay can run RM 18,250 (€3,925).
Plus, every major long-stay visa requires proof of health insurance.

How does the healthcare system work in Malaysia?

The public system
Malaysia's public system (run by the Ministry of Health, KKM) is tax-funded, with no contributory national insurance, and social security covers only workplace injuries. Foreigners pay full non-citizen rates with no subsidy. So most expats use the private hospitals, like Prince Court, Pantai, Sunway, and Gleneagles.

Malaysian pharmacies & medication
Guardian, Watsons, and BIG Pharmacy cover the cities, and pharmacists speak fluent English. There's no nationwide 24-hour rota, but the pharmacies at Pantai, Sunway, and Gleneagles hospitals run 24/7. Know that brand names differ here; so bring the generic name of anything you take regularly.

Emergency services in Malaysia
Dial 999 (or 112 from a mobile) for the unified 999 service: ambulance, police, and fire. Urban response is 15–30 minutes; Sabah, Sarawak, and rural areas can take 45+. Public ambulances go to government hospitals, while private hospitals run their own hotlines, and a private ER will ask for a deposit of RM 500–2,000 unless your cover is pre-authorized.

How much is health insurance in Malaysia?
Costs depend on whether you use public facilities at foreigner rates, a domestic plan, or international cover.
Public healthcare in Malaysia
With no subsidy, you're charged the full cost: around RM 40 (€9) for a GP visit, RM 100 (€22) for a specialist visit, RM 240 (€52) per day on a ward, and surgical deposits from RM 1,100 (€237).
Private medical insurance
Domestic hospital-and-surgical plans run around RM 300 (€65) a month for an individual and RM 750 (€161) for a family, but typically exclude outpatient, maternity, and mental health. Feather's international plans start at €56/month for Essential and €84/month for Plus, with outpatient, maternity, dental, and mental health.
And they travel with you across borders.
Visa & health insurance requirements for Malaysia
Every major long-stay visa requires proof of private health insurance. Two have a "local-insurer rule": MM2H visas need a Malaysian-licensed insurer, and the Student Pass requires a locally purchased plan through the EMGS scheme. For other visas, international cover is accepted.

Accepted for all major Malaysian visas
Feather plans qualify for the Employment Pass, DE Rantau Nomad Pass, and dependant and social-visit passes. For MM2H and the Student Pass, Feather works alongside the required local policy, adding cross-border cover and filling gaps.
