Why get private health insurance in Morocco?

Morocco's public scheme (AMO) works well for Moroccans. But for foreigners, the only way in is a Moroccan employment contract, and even then, the card takes 6–12 weeks to arrive. Retirees, nomads on tourist status, and students get no access at all. And here's the catch for the employed: the public scheme reimburses at the official public tariff, while private clinics charge three to five times that amount.

So private cover is what actually protects you. Without it, a private GP visit runs about MAD 300 (€28), and a hospital day around MAD 2,750 (€257).

Plus, every residence permit (Carte de Séjour) application requires proof of health insurance.

The public system

Morocco's mandatory scheme (AMO) runs through social security for private-sector workers and a separate fund for public-sector staff. Foreigners on a Moroccan contract are automatically enrolled, but the card takes 6–12 weeks to arrive, and retirees, nomads, and students get nothing. Quality private care is concentrated in Casablanca and Rabat.

Moroccan pharmacies & medication

Cities are densely covered (Casablanca has over 1,500 pharmacies) with a rotation for nights and Sundays, and some 24/7 options in Casablanca and Rabat. Prices are nationally regulated. Arabic and French are universal, and English is rare, so it helps to know the generic (molecule) name of your medication.

Emergency services in Morocco

Emergency services in Morocco

Dial 15 for the public ambulance (SAMU), or 141 for a doctor-staffed ambulance. French is the most common; English is limited even in the big cities. Public response runs 15–30 minutes in cities but 45 minutes to two hours in rural areas.

What expats need health insurance?

Retirees

Over-55s with a steady income can get a residence permit, which requires proof of insurance. Plus, the public scheme won't enroll foreign retirees.

Families

The public scheme covers maternity in public hospitals, but private clinics charge around MAD 16,000 (€1,496) for a birth and MAD 24,000 (€2,244) for a C-section.

Gap year & job seekers

Before your employer registers you, you have no public cover (even then, the card itself takes 6–12 weeks to issue). A temporary bridge cover is essential.

Every residence permit (work, family, retiree, investor, student) requires proof of health insurance covering hospital care, evacuation, and repatriation, translated into French or Arabic.

Public healthcare in Morocco

The public scheme takes about 2.26% of your salary (your employer adds more), but only once you're on a Moroccan contract. It then reimburses 70% of the official tariff for outpatient care and up to 90% for serious illness. The catch: private clinics charge three to five times that tariff, so a lot still falls on you.
