Why get private health insurance in South Korea?

Korea's national health insurance is mandatory for most foreigners. Once you have an Alien Registration Card and have stayed six months, you're in. Digital nomads on the F-1-D visa require private coverage of at least ₩100 million (€56,700), and can't join the public system at all. Plus, until you're enrolled, you're on your own for medical costs. A private GP visit runs about ₩55,000 (€31), and a day in hospital can cost around ₩550,000 (€310).

The national system: NHIS

Korea's NHIS (National Health Insurance Service) covers about 97% of the country. Once you're in, you can walk into any clinic or hospital you like. You'll still pay a share of the cost: roughly 30% at clinics and 20% for a hospital stay. Care is excellent, but English-speaking professionals are concentrated in Seoul, Busan, and Incheon.

Korean pharmacies & medication

You'll find pharmacies (약국) on most city blocks. Since a reform in 2000, antibiotics and stronger medicines require a prescription. English-friendly pharmacies cluster in areas like Itaewon and Gangnam, and there's a rotating late-night roster. Search "24시 약국" on Naver or Kakao Maps to find one that's open.

Dial 119 for an ambulance or any medical emergency. It's free, nationwide, and offers English interpretation. Ambulances arrive in 5–8 minutes in Seoul and Busan, and up to 45 minutes in rural areas, taking you to the nearest emergency medical center (응급의료센터).

What expats need health insurance?

Digital nomads

On the F-1-D visa, you can't use the national system. And you're required to hold private cover of at least ₩100 million (€56,700), including medical repatriation, for the duration of the visa.

Retirees

Korea has no retirement visa, so there's no automatic route into the national system. Without it, a three-night cardiac hospital stay can run around ₩4.5 million (€2,550). Private cover fills that gap.

Gap year & job seekers

On the job-seeker visa (D-10), there's no employer to enroll you and a six-month wait before national cover starts. A private plan keeps you covered (in English) in the meantime.

The national system covers dependants for free, but it excludes private rooms (about ₩225,000 / €128 per day) as well as orthodontics.

Students

Student visas enroll you in the national system once your Alien Registration Card arrives. But universities ask for a private plan to cover the wait before then.

Visa applicants

While not required for all types of visas, the rules depend on which one you're applying for. In any case, you won't be eligible for the public system for six months.
