Why get private health insurance in Cambodia?

Cambodia's public healthcare won't cover you as a foreigner, unless you're employed locally with a work permit and enrolled in the national scheme. And even then, anything serious usually means a medical flight to Bangkok or Singapore. Without insurance, the bills are yours: a private doctor's visit costs around KHR 330,000 (€70), and a night in hospital costs KHR 1.3 million (€250).

How does the healthcare system work in Cambodia?

NSSF: Cambodia's National Social Security Fund

Cambodia's public health scheme is called the NSSF. It only covers foreigners who are formally employed in Cambodia and hold a valid work visa and work permit. Retirees, students, job seekers, and tourists aren't eligible. One more thing worth knowing: reliable English-speaking care is concentrated in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Cambodian pharmacies & medication

Pharmacies are easy to find in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, and the bigger chains have English-speaking pharmacists. Prescription rules aren't enforced, so strong medication is often sold over the counter. Convenient, but it comes with counterfeit risk. Stick to the large chains or hospital pharmacies to be safe.

Emergency services in Cambodia

Emergency services in Cambodia

The national ambulance number is 119, but it's unreliable, and city traffic can hold an ambulance up for an hour. Most expats call a private hospital directly instead; the major international hospitals in Phnom Penh run their own ambulance fleets. For what the local hospitals can't handle, you'll be flown to Bangkok or Singapore. Without insurance, that costs KHR 260 million (€55,000).

What expats need health insurance?

Digital nomads

Cambodia doesn't have a digital nomad visa, so most remote workers stay on rolling business visas. No local employer means no public coverage, and a serious illness could mean an expensive evacuation flight.

Retirees

On a retirement visa? You're not required to have insurance, but you get no public coverage either. A few nights of heart tests at a private hospital can cost around KHR 22 million (€5,000).

Families

The best pediatric care is at a handful of private hospitals in Phnom Penh. A routine children's ER visit costs around KHR 1.1 million (€250), and complicated cases run KHR 4 million (€900).

Gap year & job seekers

Job hunting in Cambodia? Without an employer, you can't join the public scheme — and there's no safety net for foreigners.

Students

Student visas don't come with an insurance requirement, but most reputable international universities ask for proof of private coverage before you can enroll.

No Cambodian visa requires health insurance: tourist, work, retirement, student, etc. We wouldn't skip it, though: an emergency evacuation alone can cost tens of thousands.

How much is health insurance in Cambodia?

It depends on three things: Your age, desired level of coverage, and whether you opt for public or private.

Public healthcare in Cambodia

If you're formally employed in Cambodia, your employer pays your NSSF contributions. You pay nothing. Sounds good, but reimbursements are capped well below what expat clinics actually charge, so you'd still cover most of the bill yourself. And if you're not employed locally, you get nothing at all.

Private medical insurance

Feather's international plans start at €42/month for solid inpatient cover, with comprehensive options that add outpatient care, dental, mental health, maternity, and, crucially for Cambodia, medical evacuation to Bangkok or Singapore.

Visa & health insurance requirements for Cambodia

No Cambodian visa requires health insurance. But the public system can't handle serious cases for foreigners, and an evacuation is expensive. No requirements, but real risk.
