Why get private health insurance in Jordan?
Jordan is the Middle East's top medical-tourism destination, with world-class, internationally accredited hospitals. But there's a catch for expats: foreigners are never eligible for the public health scheme, no matter how long you've lived here.
So, private cover is key. Without it, a private GP visit costs about JOD 23 (€27), and a hospital night costs around JOD 190 (€230).
Plus, the Work, Investor, Real Estate, and Family visas all require private cover.
How does the healthcare system work in Jordan?

The public system
Jordan runs Ministry of Health hospitals and the Royal Medical Services, with a public insurance scheme (CIP) on top. But that scheme is for Jordanian citizens only. Expats can't enroll. Around 70 of the country's ~122 hospitals are private, and English-speaking care is the norm in Amman.

Jordanian pharmacies & medication
Pharmacies (صيدليات) are everywhere in Amman, Irbid, Zarqa, and Aqaba, and pharmacists in West Amman generally speak English well. The cities run a 24-hour rotation, and Talabat delivers across Amman. One thing to know: antibiotics, sleep aids, and psychiatric medicines need a fresh Jordanian prescription, written in Arabic.

Emergency services in Jordan
Dial 911 for police, ambulance, and fire. Free and staffed by English-speaking operators. Response in Amman is 8–15 minutes; Aqaba, Petra, and the desert regions take 20–60. Private hospitals accept walk-in emergencies, but expect upfront payment or insurance pre-approval if you're not a citizen.
