What is expat health insurance?

Expat health insurance provides private medical coverage for people living in Italy who are not yet enrolled in -or prefer not to rely on- the SSN (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale).

It covers hospitalisation, specialist care, emergencies, and repatriation, and meets the insurance requirements for Italian visas and the permesso di soggiorno.

With Feather, your certificate is ready to download the same day you sign up.

Registering at the Comune

Registering your residence at the Anagrafe is your first step after arrival, and it's what unlocks SSN enrollment. Many municipalities ask for proof of health coverage to register, and your Feather certificate is ready in English and Italian the moment you sign up, so you can bring it to your appointment without waiting.

Covering the gap to SSN enrollment

Once you're registered, SSN enrollment can still take weeks. Feather keeps you covered in the meantime, with next-day activation and no penalty to cancel once your Tessera Sanitaria arrives.

Prefer to keep private access alongside the SSN? You can stay on the plan as a top-up for private hospitals and shorter wait times.
