Health insurance for expats in Italy

If you are already in Italy at the moment when you purchase the policy, a 31-day waiting period applies.

During this period emergencies are covered and the insurance is still valid for visa/residence applications. After 31 days, the full coverage kicks in.

The waiting period can be waived if you can show proof of an insurance that has equivalent or broader coverage before without any gap in coverage.

Our insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions.

This means any illness, symptoms, or treatments that existed before your policy start date will not be reimbursed—you would need to pay for those costs out of pocket.

However, this has no impact on your visa eligibility. The insurance is still fully accepted for visa and residence permit applications.

Yes. When you register your residence at the Anagrafe, the municipality asks for proof of health coverage, and Feather's policy meets this requirement. Your certificate is ready in English and Italian as soon as you sign up, so you can bring it to your appointment without waiting.

This step matters for your health cover too: you can't enroll in the SSN until you're registered at the Anagrafe. Feather keeps you covered through that whole period — which is exactly what the municipality wants to see.

If you're a non-EU citizen, you usually register at the Anagrafe once you have your address and your permesso di soggiorno receipt.
