What is the Hungary White Card?

The White Card is Hungary's residence permit for digital nomads. It's for non-EU citizens who work remotely for an employer outside Hungary, or own a company abroad and run it from their laptop. It's valid for one year and can be extended once.

What you'll need to show

You'll need proof of a net income of at least €3,000 a month for the six months before you apply. You'll also show your employment or company documents, accommodation in Hungary, and health insurance that covers your stay.

After you're approved

If you apply at a consulate, you receive a D visa to enter Hungary and collect your residence permit card. The immigration authority (the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing) decides within 21 to 30 days of a complete application.

Renewing and staying longer

The White Card can be extended for one more year. At the extension, you'll show the same things again: income, accommodation, and health insurance. The White Card doesn't lead to permanent residence, so after two years you'd switch to a different permit route.

White Card

One policy for approval and renewal

Hungary asks for proof of health insurance when you apply and again when you extend after year one. Your Feather policy renews monthly and continues with you, so there's never a gap to explain.

Access private healthcare

The White Card doesn't come with Hungarian public health insurance, because you're not employed in Hungary. You can pay into the state system voluntarily, but it costs around €340 a month and comes with waiting periods. Most White Card holders keep private coverage for their whole stay.

Flexible for a two-year plan

The White Card caps out at two years, and your plans might change before then. Your Feather policy is monthly with no lock-in, so you can cancel when you leave Hungary, or keep it if you move on to another Schengen country.
