Finally, staff issue your Cartão SUS on the spot, free of charge. You can also register via the [Meu SUS Digital app](https://www.gov.br/saude), the Ministry of Health’s online portal.

### **What does SUS actually cover?**

Prescriptions are free or heavily subsidized through the Farmácia Popular programme. Vaccines, including travel vaccines, are also free through SUS.

SUS can't guarantee speed or consistency, though. A specialist appointment can take weeks or even months. Emergency care is immediate, but ERs are routinely overcrowded.

Brazilian private health insurance is known as planos de saúde. It's regulated by the [ANS (Agência Nacional de Saúde Suplementar)](https://www.ans.gov.br/). ANS can't refuse you enrollment based on health status. 

### **What happens to premiums after you turn 59?**

Resolução Normativa No. 563/2022 updated the earlier RN 63/2003. Under it, insurers can charge up to six times the base premium rate across the full age range. A plan costing BRL 350 per month at age 30 can legally cost BRL 2,100 per month at age 59 or above.

### **What is the 24-month pre-existing condition wait?**

Under Lei 9.656/1998, insurers can't refuse enrollment for pre-existing conditions. But they can impose a carência, a mandatory 24-month waiting period before treating them.
