Why get private health insurance in Argentina?

Argentina has plenty of doctors and a long tradition of free public care. Yet, a 2025 decree ended automatic public access for temporary residents: digital nomads, students, rentistas, and pensioners now need private cover.

Without cover, a private GP visit runs about ARS 55,000 (€33), and a hospital day around ARS 525,000 (€315).

And there's a new rule at the border: since July 2025, insurance is mandatory to enter (at a minimum, travel insurance).

The public system

Argentina's public hospitals are tax-funded and were historically free to all, but the 2025 decree stripped temporary residents of that access, and some provinces now bill non-resident foreigners for non-emergency care. Emergency care stays free for everyone. English-speaking care is concentrated in Buenos Aires.

Argentine pharmacies & medication

Pharmacies are everywhere in the cities: Farmacity, Dr. Ahorro, Vantage, and independent pharmacies. Every city runs a 24-hour on-duty pharmacy rotation. Spanish is standard, with occasional English in Buenos Aires neighborhoods like Recoleta and Palermo. Many medicines that need a prescription in the US or EU (antibiotics, contraceptives) are sold over the counter here.

Dial 911 anywhere for police, fire, or an ambulance, or 107 for public ambulances in cities like Buenos Aires and Córdoba. Urban response targets around 10 minutes, while rural Patagonia can take 30–45. Dispatchers work in Spanish first, with limited English. It's worth letting your embassy know if you're hospitalised.
